American Idol Season 21 winner Iam Tongi took a monumental step in his career on June 11 by performing for the first time at the iconic Grand Ole Opry — a moment he dedicated to his late father.
A Dream Come True at the Opry
At just 20 years old, Iam Tongi walked into the legendary Opry circle with tears in his eyes and his father in his heart. The Hawaiian-born singer, who made history as the first Pacific Islander to win American Idol, shared emotional photos of his debut, capturing everything from backstage rehearsals to his powerful live performance.
“My dad was a huge country music fan. I grew up listening to The Grand Ole Opry with him but never imagined I’d get to stand in the circle, on this stage. Tonight was a dream come true. This one’s for you, Dad,” Tongi wrote in a heartfelt Instagram caption.
The Viral Audition That Started It All
Tongi first captured hearts across America with his tear-jerking Idol audition, singing James Blunt’s “Monsters” in honor of his father, who had passed away shortly before filming. That clip now has over 38 million views, one of the most-watched auditions in the show’s history.
Since winning the competition, Tongi has been dedicated to building a long-term music career. He’s released original songs and contributed to Disney’s live-action Lilo & Stitch soundtrack, recording “Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride” alongside the Kamehameha Schools Children’s Chorus.

Garth Brooks Surprises Iam with Message of Support
After Tongi’s Opry debut, he was greeted with a surprise congratulatory video from country legend Garth Brooks, who said:
“I know you said you lost your dad, but I know you talk to him every day. You tell him I love him.”
Tongi was visibly moved watching the video backstage, wiping away tears as he sat in his dressing room.
“That’s crazy. Garth Brooks, right there. That’s crazy. My dad loved Garth Brooks. I learned ‘The Dance’ for my mom,” he said, overcome with emotion.
