During the June 10 episode of America’s Got Talent Season 20, 49-year-old singer Charity Lockhart brought the judges and audience to their feet — and walked away with the coveted Golden Buzzer after a second-chance performance that stunned everyone.
From Homelessness to a Dream Stage

Before singing a single note, Lockhart shared her powerful backstory. Years ago, after going through a divorce, she and her young children ended up living in their car. But even then, she refused to give up hope.
“All I had was my voice,” Lockhart told the judges. “So I went to clubs and bars and I asked live bands if I could sing with them.”

The small gigs and local vocal competitions eventually helped her secure a new apartment for her family — and set her on a path toward the AGT stage.
A Rocky Start That Led to Magic
Lockhart first sang “Over the Rainbow,” but before she could finish the opening verse, Simon Cowell raised his hand and stopped the performance. The crowd booed, but Cowell explained his intentions:
“I stopped you because I like you, but it just wasn’t working for me.”
He asked if she had another song — and what came next changed everything.
Lockhart launched into a soul-stirring rendition of The Beatles’ “Golden Slumber.” Her voice soared with power and vulnerability, earning a standing ovation from all four judges and the audience.
Mel B Awards the Golden Buzzer
Clearly moved, Mel B praised Lockhart for her authenticity and presence. Then, without hesitation, she slammed the Golden Buzzer, sending Lockhart straight to the AGT Live Shows.
“You connect with people,” Mel B told her. “You just bring more and more to the table. I think you’re amazing.”
A Performance That Will Be Remembered
Simon Cowell summed it up perfectly:
“This is what a great audition is all about… when they’re going to talk about you the following day.”
Charity Lockhart’s journey — from singing for tips to standing center stage in front of millions — is the kind of story America’s Got Talent was made for.
